Groundhog Day Fun for Kids: Will We See More Winter or an Early Spring?

Every year on February 2nd, we celebrate a fun and quirky tradition known as Groundhog Day.

The idea is simple. If the groundhog comes out of its burrow and sees its shadow, it returns inside and we can expect six more weeks of winter. If there is no shadow, it means spring will arrive early!

This tradition began in North America over 100 years ago and has roots in ancient weather lore. It may not be scientifically accurate, but it is a great way to introduce kids to seasonal changes, animal behaviors, and weather patterns in a fun, lighthearted way.

Groundhog Day is also a fun time to engage kids in learning through hands-on activities. That is why we created a Groundhog Day Activity Sheet to help your child or classroom explore the tradition while practicing skills like observation, prediction, drawing, and writing.

Here are a few ways to make Groundhog Day educational and fun:

  • Learn about groundhogs: Look up facts about where they live, how they hibernate, and what they eat.

  • Discuss seasons and weather: Talk about how we transition from winter to spring and what signs of spring we notice.

  • Make predictions: Ask the children if they think the groundhog will see its shadow this year and why.

  • Track results: Watch the news together or check online to see what the groundhog decided.

The activity sheet includes a place to record their prediction, a fun coloring section, and space for drawing what the weather looks like on February 2nd. It is a simple way to add learning and creativity to your day.
