6 Tips for a Sensory-Friendly Christmas

The Christmas season is an exciting time of year for any family. But, for children with sensory sensitivities, all the activities surrounding the holidays can feel overwhelming and cause additional stress. Here are 6 easy ways to make your Christmas sensory-friendly.

Consider Alternate Wrapping

Every child loves receiving gifts, but some children may not enjoy traditional packaging or wrapping paper. Consider using frustration free packaging, or remove the packing entirely and just wrap the toys.

And, speaking of packaging, consider if the wrapping paper is the best option. Will the child like ripping the paper? Or will the noise be too much? Alternate options include wrapping the gift in cloth or putting it inside a gift bag.

Adjust the Lighting
Not all children love the bright twinkle that comes with Christmas lights. If your child is sensitive to lights, consider leaving them off your tree entirely, or choose an option that provides a dimmer switch.

Plan in Advance
Heading somewhere special, or visiting family you don’t see on a regular basis? Plan as much as you can in advance. Ask for special accommodations if needed and don’t forget to prepare your child, too. Share photos or videos from past visits, create a social story or find resources online to help your child feel more comfortable.

 Travel with Essentials
If there are comfort items that help your child cope with sensory stimulation, don’t leave them out of your holiday celebrations. Pack up the weighted blanket, noise reduction headphones, sunglasses, cuddle buddies and fidget toys.

Seek Out Sensory Friendly Events
There are plenty of holidays designed specifically for families with sensory needs, including photos with Santa during Santa Cares events. With hundreds of mall locations across North America, these events are designed with reduced lighting and music, reservations outside of normal shopping hours, and sensory-friendly trained Santa and staff who can support those with special needs and their families.  Don’t Overdo It
This may be the most important tip of all. There’s no rule that says holidays need to have hustle and bustle. Instead, keep it simple. It’s okay to say no to things that will overwhelm you or your child.  Plan activities that your family will enjoy, and find magic in the moments you spend together.
